From 3e3ebec25a8b325d750c1918af27dbbbc5d20474 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Edward Langley Date: Mon, 21 Sep 2026 04:06:44 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 1/6] kb+docs: an injection that does not fail names an untested path MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Five facts from Wave J. The one worth reading is the first: check_the_checker is written as "inject the fault and watch it fail", and the case where it PASSES is the more informative result, because it is evidence about the test rather than about the code. On improvise-sihr, forcing ReturnToNormalUnlessMoved alone back to Normal left the characterization test green — which is how the untested path was found. An empty colon line takes ExecuteCommand's is_empty branch and settles through ChangeMode, so the effect settling every colon line that actually runs had no test. There are two tests rather than one because of it. Also records why ChangeMode could hide the bug at all: it was a simple_effect!, which declares a one-field newtype writing one place, so there was nowhere for a rule to live and the exit mode had to be a constant in the keymap and in each commit command. Gotcha 16 already warns the macro's kind argument must be mandatory; this is a second cost of the same shape. And that improvise-9c9o's ticket pre-diagnosed its own fix as a protocol change, and was wrong — the basis is App's own bookkeeping, so it was achieved by moving where the re-base happens. A pre-diagnosis is a hypothesis wearing the authority of a decision. Inventory: three protocol files were absent entirely — help.rs (925), client.rs (255) and resolve.rs, which at 2477 lines and 46 tests is the largest file in the crate. Filed improvise-e5pf: Command::ChangeMode(Normal) is on the wire and reduce_view folds it without the records resolution. Latent — keys.rs emits no ChangeMode and a view-half command never reaches the host's slice, both verified rather than assumed — and closeable only by enriching the projection. False: the refusal is conditioned on used_features, so a fit that never split on the column SUCCEEDED, and the wide columns are exactly the ones a fit has least reason to split on. Measured with a throwaway probe on both sides. The sentence sat one paragraph below the "permanent refusal" claim the previous wave had just corrected, in the same section, green on either reading. So prose_that_calls_something_permanent_forecloses_the_ticket has a sibling. A cost claim is as checkable as a permanence claim and is checked the same way: construct the document the claim says does not exist. Filed improvise-e8no for the cost, with a note not to close it by making the forcing conditional on cardinality — that is inference by another name. The branch's own adversarial round found a bug the branch introduced: forcing by column NAME while budgeting by column INDEX, and a document may legally name a category and a measure the same thing. Repaired as a data dependency rather than a moved line, so the injection is a compile error. GridLayout::new has now caused FOUR bugs. improvise-iot6 was the last production instance — every remaining call site is test code, which I verified rather than took on report: two of them sit inside cfg(test) blocks well below the module head and neither was named in the hand-back. PASSES on pre-PR main (0947fd0) and on round-1 head (bcccfde); FAILS at d9cb16c.

Round 1 compared frame hashes across a view change, which threw a cursor away spuriously. Round 2 added a 'was == self.view_name()' guard, which fixes that — but it also exempts the FIRST geometry effect after a mid-batch SwitchView from the check altogether, because there is no basis for the new view yet, so the code re-bases and skips.

## Steps to Reproduce
app.apply_effects(vec![SwitchView("Second"), TransposeAxes]);
Both preconditions hold: the switch lands, and row_count() really changes. Yet cursor_epoch does not move and the cursor stays at (2,0) in a transposed grid.

## Acceptance Criteria
- The probe above lands as a guard.
- The basis re-bases to the new view AT THE SWITCH rather than at the next geometry effect — i.e. the basis follows active_view changes, which SwitchView being ViewOnly currently prevents. Not a one-liner.

WHY THE DIRECTION MATTERS: round 1 threw away a cursor that should have been kept; round 2 keeps one that should have been thrown away. Gotcha 35's asymmetry says under-reporting is the expensive side — a stale cursor has nothing in the stream to correct it, where an extra invalidation costs one redundant projection.

Reachability is the same narrow class as the bug it replaced: a . -chained : line, or any future Binding::Sequence composing the two. DrillIntoCell and EnterRecordsMode hit the pattern constantly but their target view is freshly created, so it is benign there. So a client on another view was projected rows its own view config prunes. Measured on a two-view fixture where both views prune and one row is empty:

Second via grid_in (GridLayout::new) 3 rows: North, Service, South
Second via with_frozen_records (pruned) 2 rows: North, South

One line. It broke no other test, which is itself evidence nothing depended on the unpruned behaviour.

WHY IT MATTERS MORE THAN ITS SIZE -- IT WAS A BUG HIDING A BUG. The adversarial review of #78 found a P1: after improvise-mcq4 narrowed the cursor fingerprint to the active view, a CellData write that prunes a row out of ANOTHER client's view stopped invalidating that client. Writing the regression test for it FAILED AT THE PRECONDITION -- the bystander's projected grid never lost a row, because grid_in never pruned it. The staleness was real and logically reachable, and completely unobservable through the projection. Fixing grid_in is what made the P1 demonstrable, and the P1 test is what found grid_in.

THIRD INSTANCE OF ONE TRAP: GridLayout::new does not prune; GridLayout::with_frozen_records does. Previously bitten by App::view_frame (improvise-ni6k, caught by a failing test) and by the reshape benchmark's geometry fixture (improvise-mcq4, caught only by measuring). A constructor whose name suggests it is the general one, and which silently omits a view setting, is worth a look on its own terms -- either new should prune, or the names should say which is which.

STILL OPEN AROUND IT, not fixed here: nothing asserts that a client on a non-active view is projected a grid matching ITS OWN view config in general. prune_empty is one setting; the rest is a guarantee by inspection rather than by test.

UPDATE 2026-09-21, after PR #83 merged: the DOCS half is done — the code-review skill's gate list and every wave brief now run both spellings. The reviewer's position was that CI runs all three forms (ci.yml L144/146/148) so this is documentation only; the counter is that the flagged form is the EXPENSIVE one (it needs a compiled workspace), which makes it the one a human runs alone, and a gate whose skip is silent is the defect class this repo keeps finding.

Two shapes: make --check-evidence additive (run the cap too), or make the flagged run print one line saying the cap did not run. Found while merging PR #78 (improvise-ni6k) with PR #76 (improvise-748f), which landed first.

improvise-748f split the geometry fingerprint so that a batch which writes NO cell -- the held-key path, [/] and axis cycle and hide/show -- stays O(config) instead of walking 18,000 cells. improvise-ni6k's App::view_frame builds a GridLayout per view via with_frozen_records, and with_frozen_records applies prune_empty, and prune_empty WALKS CELLS. So for a view with prune_empty on, ni6k puts the O(cells) walk straight back onto the path 748f had just taken it off.

MEASURED on the merged tree, benches/reshape_observation.rs, one CycleAxis batch, prune_empty ON, frame fingerprint disabled vs enabled:

400 cells 93.6us -> 283.2us 3.0x
9,600 cells 1.97ms -> 7.34ms 3.7x
18,000 cells 3.04ms -> 12.41ms 4.1x
90,000 cells 28.5ms -> 91.7ms 3.2x

The 16.7ms frame budget is crossed at 18,000 cells, where the pre-fingerprint tree sat comfortably inside it at 3.0ms.

WHY 3-4x AND NOT 2x: view_frames builds every view's layout, before AND after each model effect. The bench fixture has two views, so that is four pruned layout builds against the one rebuild_layout already does.

WHY THE COST WAS NOT SEEN EARLIER: ni6k's own benchmark measures a SetCell batch, where 748f's document_content walk dominates and the fingerprint reads as +2 to +5 percent. And the geometry case, when first added, used the dense_app fixture as-is -- prune_empty OFF -- where with_frozen_records does not walk cells at all and a CycleAxis batch reads 17-176us. THAT FIXTURE MEASURES THE CHEAP HALF AND CALLS IT THE COST. It is the same non-discriminating-fixture failure this repo names everywhere; the numbers above come from turning prune_empty on, and the benchmark now does.

OPTIONS, none taken:
- Fingerprint only the ACTIVE view for the cursor and fall back to the cheaper config hash (last_reshaped_views) for the client audience. Over-resets bystanders on other views, which is the safe direction per gotcha 35, and removes the per-view multiplier. Probably the right answer.
- Memoise the pruned layout across the before/after pair.
- Accept, on the argument that prune_empty plus a large document plus a held key is rare. That argument needs the user, not an agent.

DO NOT close this by re-running the benchmark with prune_empty off.
FIXED to 1.9x, not closed: one pruned build per model effect remains.

The coordinator ruled this must be fixed before PR #78 lands, and was right -- a cost measured to four significant figures is a decision to ship, not a thing to file.

WHAT WORKED, AND IT IS NOT WHAT THE TICKET PROPOSED. The ticket's first option (and my own suggestion) was to fingerprint only the ACTIVE view and fall back to the config hash for the client audience. Implemented and measured: it bought NOTHING -- 12.41ms -> 12.56ms at 18,000 cells. The bench's second view is one created fresh with everything on Axis::None, so building it costs nothing. THE PER-VIEW MULTIPLIER WAS NEVER THE COST; two EXPENSIVE builds were. That is only known because it was measured after implementing rather than reasoned about before.

WHAT ACTUALLY WORKED: the opening basis is free. At batch start App::layout already IS the active view's pruned layout, so opening_view_frame() hashes it instead of building a second one. frame_of() is the shared hash and view_frame() builds then calls it.

one CycleAxis batch, prune_empty ON:
before after fingerprint off
400 cells 283.2us 167.0us 93.6us
9,600 cells 7.34ms 3.879ms 1.967ms
18,000 cells 12.41ms 5.752ms 3.043ms
90,000 cells 91.69ms 56.54ms 28.52ms

4.1x -> 1.9x at the canonical size, back inside the 16.7ms frame budget.

Two guards on the free basis: it is gated on drill_state.is_none(), because a drill freezes the record list and the held layout is then not what view_frame would build; and it is opening-use only, because App::layout is stale mid-batch (gotcha 23).

THE NARROWING WAS KEPT anyway, because it is the honest shape -- the cursor's question is about one view. The audience half is now the config diff observe_reshape already computes free. It over-reports (safe direction) and is read only behind the epoch gate in adopt_cursor_epoch, so its imprecision cannot reach a batch that reframed nothing. a_reshape_of_one_view_leaves_a_client_on_another_view_alone still passes, so it has not widened into improvise-nynk's negative arm.

BOTH SUBSUMPTION PROOFS RE-RUN AFTER THE NARROWING, since narrowing is exactly what could quietly stop covering something: #76's own two arms still pass with no per-effect reset anywhere; AddFormula/RemoveFormula and SortData are still covered; disabling the narrowed observation fails ten tests.

WHAT REMAINS, AND WHY THIS STAYS OPEN: one pruned layout build per model effect. The LAST one duplicates work rebuild_layout does immediately afterwards, and eliding it means moving the check after the loop -- which is the position that clobbers a deliberate cursor placement in the same batch (the three records-mode tests that caught it the first time). A restructure that knows which effect is last, including on abort, is possible and was not attempted at this hour.

The benchmark now carries the held-key case with prune_empty ON and a comment saying not to turn it off, because that fixture is the only reason any of this was visible.
THE NARROWING BOUGHT ITS SPEED PARTLY WITH CORRECTNESS, and the adversarial review of PR #78 caught it. Correcting my own note above.

I narrowed the frame fingerprint from every view to the active one, measured that it moved 12.41ms to 12.56ms, kept it anyway "as the honest shape", and reported that it bought nothing. It bought a P1: a CellData write that prunes a row out of ANOTHER client's view became invisible. view_shapes is config-only -- it hashes the prune_empty FLAG, not which rows survive -- so last_reshaped_views is empty, the one-view frame covers only the host's, and the bystander is never sent ResetCursor while its grid loses a row. Gotcha 24's permanently-stale case.

THE LESSON I WANT ON THIS TICKET: a measurement showing a change is free is not evidence that it is correct. I answered "what does this cost" and reported the answer as though it had also answered "is this right". The two questions were asked in the wrong order and only one of them was asked at all.

THE REPAIR, and the cost trade is accepted deliberately rather than hidden:
- LayoutGeometry arm keeps the cheap one-view frame. view_mut() writes only the active view, and the structural cases (AddCategory, RemoveCategory, Add/RemoveItem) are already covered by view_shapes.
- CellData arm restores the all-views frame, because a cell write can prune a row out of any view.

Measured, my own numbers, one batch, prune_empty ON:
held-key (CycleAxis) 18k cells 5.69ms -- UNCHANGED, 0%
SetCell 18k cells 10.66ms -> 11.26ms +5.7%

The +5.7% scales LINEARLY IN VIEW COUNT on the CellData arm. A ten-view document pays it ten times. That is the trade and it is accepted, not hidden.

THE ABSOLUTE, stated plainly because it should not be discovered later: even after the mcq4 fix, this PR roughly DOUBLES held-key latency on large pruned documents -- 3.04ms to 5.69ms at 18,000 cells -- and 56ms at 90,000 cells is 3.4 frames. The 16.7ms budget is respected at the canonical size and is not respected at the pathological one, which was also true before at 28.5ms.

A SECOND BUG FOUND WHILE WRITING THE REGRESSION TEST, filed as improvise-t6db: the test's precondition failed because grid_in built a non-active view with GridLayout::new, which does not prune. The bystander's projected grid never lost a row, so the P1 was unobservable -- a bug hiding a bug.

STILL OPEN, unchanged: one pruned build per model effect. The last duplicates rebuild_layout and can only be elided by moving the check after the loop, which clobbers a deliberate cursor placement in the same batch. With the arms now split, moving the LayoutGeometry arm alone after the loop fails 2 tests; the reviewer measured 4 against the unified arm before the split.

diff --git a/context/repo-map.md b/context/repo-map.md index 379975b6..8516bf1c 100644 --- a/context/repo-map.md +++ b/context/repo-map.md @@ -159,6 +159,7 @@ Region=West, Measure=Revenue = |pending| # pipe-quoted text 1. **Records mode is wide format.** A row is one *coordinate tuple* — the cells sharing everything but `_Measure` — and the columns are `[coordinates…, **`+cat`**, raw measures…, `+`]`: a column per regular category, then the column that creates a **new category** (improvise-2zq, sitting where the column it creates will appear), then a column per raw measure, then the column that creates a new measure (improvise-c5v). Drill pending edits are keyed by `(row, RecordCol)`. **`prune_axis_items` takes a predicate, not a flag vector.** `prune_empty` hands it `impl Fn(usize) -> bool` over the *data* index (group headers consume no index). The domain is derived from `items` itself, so there is no parallel length a caller could get wrong — the earlier `&[bool]` + `debug_assert` pair could disagree between debug and release if a third caller ever sized `keep` from something other than `row_count()`/`col_count()` (improvise-n3wt). + **`GridLayout::new` does not prune; `with_frozen_records` does** — and that split has now produced **four** bugs: `view_frame`, `project::grid_in` (PR #78), and `persistence/export.rs::render_csv` (improvise-iot6), which wrote rows *and columns* the grid does not draw for as long as CSV export has existed. Every remaining `GridLayout::new` call site in the workspace is test code — verified — so a new production caller almost certainly wants `with_frozen_records(m, v, None)`. 2. **Effects never touch `std::fs`.** Every document read or write goes through `App::storage: Box` (improvise-fuj). The host picks the backend: `App::new` supplies `PhysicalFs`, `App::with_storage` takes any other — a browser worker will supply OPFS (improvise-i34), and tests use `MemoryFs`. `improvise-io` keeps path-taking wrappers (`save`, `load`, `export_csv`, `parse_csv_with_warnings`) for the native CLI, each delegating to a `_to`/`_from`/`_bytes` variant that takes the backend or the bytes. 3. **Every effect declares an `EffectKind`, and there is no default.** `ViewOnly` never reaches other clients; `Model(CellData | LayoutGeometry | WholeWorkbook)` does (improvise-mae). A new effect that forgets to classify itself fails to compile — that is deliberate, since the failure mode is silent: a mis-declared `ViewOnly` edit would simply never reach connected clients. Watch two traps: the *View* lives inside `model_state.workbook`, so "touches model_state" does NOT mean "is a model change" (axis/page/format are `LayoutGeometry`, cursor and scroll are `ViewOnly` — see improvise-8uz; and `SwitchView`, `ViewBack` and `ViewForward` moved from `LayoutGeometry` to `ViewOnly` with improvise-jytm, writing `view_state` and nothing else, which is what took the latter two off the wire — but a sound derivation is not a guard: only `SwitchView` had one, and review showed reclassifying either sibling back was silent across the whole suite); and `Save`/`SaveAs`/`MarkDirty` touch `model_state` for bookkeeping only and are `ViewOnly`. `AddCategory`/`RemoveCategory` are the third trap and go the other way: they look like data edits, but both go through `Workbook`, whose `on_category_added`/`on_category_removed` rewrite **every** view's axis map, so they are `LayoutGeometry`. The two "an effect declaring X actually changes X" tests cannot separate them — a category change moves model data *and* view config, so it clears either bar; `structural_effects_declare_their_kind` pins the declaration itself. A third trap, now guarded: **`EffectKind` is too coarse to check a *mapping*.** `ui/reduce.rs::model_effects` sends each of 28 `ModelCommand` variants to one effect, and every inverse pair — `HideItem`/`ShowItem`, `AddItem`/`RemoveItem`, `CreateView`/`DeleteView`, `SetCell`/`ClearCell` — declares the *same* kind, so swapping three of them at once left the suite at 918 passing while three wire messages did the exact inverse of what they said. The mapping is name-for-name by construction, so `every_model_command_names_the_effect_of_the_same_name` asserts that, reading the type name off the effect's derived `Debug` (`Effect` is a trait object, so `type_name` is out of reach). A variant whose effect must be named something else is a variant that stopped being derived — it should fail there and be argued about. Their reach is wider than the name suggests: `Model::remove_category` also drops every formula targeting the category, which is why `Dirty::of(LayoutGeometry)` reports `formulas: true` — see gotcha 35. @@ -213,7 +214,7 @@ Region=West, Measure=Revenue = |pending| # pipe-quoted text 36. **A client's command has one door, and the door takes the `App`.** `Sessions::apply_checked(app, id, Checked<'_>)` is the only way a connected client's `Command` reaches the server — `Host` calls *that* (improvise-ahdf). `Sessions::apply` is not `pub`, delegates to `apply_checked` after `Checked::against`, and has no production caller: its call sites are tests, which is why it takes a raw `&Command`. `ClientSession::fold` and the mirror's `ViewState` are private, so a transport cannot reach the mirror at all. `apply_switch` now **takes a `SessionId`** — it is addressed to exactly one session, which is the opposite of what this gotcha used to say — moves only that session's mirror, and dirties nothing. The one thing it still asks the document is whether the view exists, because a mirror keys `ViewState::cursors` and is read by `grid_in`. The audience is conditional: an accepted switch relays **nothing** (the asker folded it, and no other client's view moves), a refused one is `Broadcast::To(asker, …)` — improvise-6c6q, where `ToOthers` told every client but the one that was wrong. `adopt_active_view` and `Broadcast::ToOthers` are **deleted**; the variants are `ToAll` and `To(SessionId, _)`, the second because the deleted-view case needs a one-session audience that is *not* the asker. The paragraph's warning about the "what do the others hear" helper survives and is why the 6c6q test drives the asker's own `ViewState` — that helper is itself deleted. What survives unchanged: the model is shared and the UI is not, and `Broadcast` is a `Vec` because one command can owe two relays with different audiences. **The trap this paragraph used to describe is gone with `ToOthers`, and the lesson it taught is not.** It was copying `ToOthers` from `apply_switch` into `apply_model`, invisible from the bystander's side because `adopt_active_view` moved the asker's mirror either way — so the drift sat between the server's picture of the asker and the asker's own slice, where a test written through a "what do the others hear" helper looks away by construction. improvise-6c6q closed the mirror-image hole on the refused path. Two rules survive the mechanism: **assert the `Broadcast` itself**, since the audience is the message rather than something to infer from folded state, and **seat a bystander somewhere a wrong relay can move it from** — a bystander already on the relayed value cannot see a wrongly *widened* audience either, because the wrong relay folds to a no-op. Review demonstrated that vacuity twice on PR #48. A `Vec` rather than an `Option` because one command can owe two relays with different audiences, and an `Option` would have had to drop one silently. Everything else is that client's alone and never touches the `App`'s own view slice: **the model is shared, the UI is not.** Folding `SwitchView` into the mirror alone was the bug — `viewport()` then read the cursor under the new view's key and the next `project()` built that client a grid out of the *other* view. -37. **`gp-tree` returns data and never prints, and a fit takes two things to reproduce.** Two rules with one root — the crate is a library a TUI, a wasm worker or a CLI may each host. (a) A decision the user should hear about comes back as **data**: `Dataset::warnings` carries the columns `preprocess` dropped for being entirely missing (improvise-d44s), and `fit.rs` hands back pooled `(prediction, actual)` pairs and a score per feature rather than tables. `examples/fit_csv.rs` owns every `println!`, and that is the only reason its output stayed byte-identical across these moves — adding an `eprintln!` to either module is the regression. (b) **The seed is necessary and not sufficient**: `data::Model` records `seed: Option` *and* `config: Option`, because the same seed under a different population/generations/elite/penalty lands on a different tree (improvise-ksst). Both are `Option` for one reason — every `FitConfig` value and the seed `0` are legal, so nothing can double as "unknown". Note `#[serde(default)]` on an `Option` field is **documentation, not the mechanism**: serde defaults it anyway, so deleting the attribute fails no test, and a backward-compatibility test that only deletes it is not discriminating. Aim such a test at an absent field loading as the *default* instead of as unknown. The GA loop itself is `fit::fit` (improvise-0ai); `breed` remains one fitness-agnostic generation for callers whose fitness is not "predict this column". Changing any of this needs **bit-level** evidence: `tests/scoring_known_answers.rs` pins every path as f32 bit patterns plus a `next_u64` witness that catches a changed RNG call order, because the CLI prints three or four decimals and byte-identical output alone cannot see a moved accumulation. It now forces the same `header[..category_columns]` slice to `Forced::Categorical`. Two things follow. The **date decline is narrower than it read** — it covers a genuine date *measure*, never a category misread as one. And the forcing **widens the encoding**: a hundred-item numeric category one-hots past `MAX_FEATURES` and refuses a fit that previously succeeded by never splitting on it (improvise-e8no — and **not** to be closed by making the forcing conditional on cardinality, which is inference by another name and makes the *encoding* depend on a budget rather than on what the document says). The `Artefact` arms stay: `crate::dataset` is `pub` and takes the caller's `Overrides`, so the roles are still reachable. **Forcing by name while budgeting by index defeats the budget** — a category and a measure may legally share a name, and `no_ambiguous_column_names` ran *after* `preprocess`, so the expansion the preflight exists to prevent was allocated and only then refused; `as_categories` now returns `Result`, so the ordering is a compile error rather than a convention. The test that missed all this is the shape to remember: `improvise_eval` **fabricates** a `_Measure` item per feature name, so it asserted the emitter and `gp_tree::eval` agree against a model that could not exist. It is kept, with its scope now stated, and the property it could not state is asserted separately against a real document. 38. **The wire vocabulary is derived twice, by the same recipe.** `Command`'s view half is the `EffectKind::ViewOnly` effects targeting the portable slice (`decision(improvise-cqi, command_set_derived_not_invented)`); its model half, `ModelCommand`, is the `EffectKind::Model(..)` effects — **26** of them since improvise-jytm made `SwitchView`, `ViewBack` and `ViewForward` `ViewOnly` — minus `ApplyAndClearDrill` and `AcceptWizardModel`, leaving **24** variants (improvise-kmgs). `SwitchView` no longer needs subtracting separately: it is not a model effect any more. `ViewBack`/`ViewForward` left for the *same* reason as the other two exclusions — their operand is `ViewState::view_back_stack`, session-local residue belonging to whoever navigated. Note the obvious `awk` extraction reports **30**: it picks up `HelpPageSet`, which is `ViewOnly`, because that is the last `pub struct` before `#[cfg(test)]` and the test module mentions `ModelChange::` — brace-match the `impl Effect` blocks instead (`doctrine(derive_then_verify)`). Three things follow. **A `ModelCommand` does not mutate**: `ui/reduce.rs::model_effects` maps it back to the effect it came from and `apply_command` runs that through `App::apply_effects`, so effects stay the only mutation site and the `Dirty` is the effect's own `EffectKind`, never a second classification beside gotcha 35's table. **Two model effects are deliberately off the wire.** `ApplyAndClearDrill` and `AcceptWizardModel` were once kept on the grounds that the *command* is portable even where the operand is not; **that was the wrong criterion** (improvise-3x3u). A `Command::Model` is routed with no `SessionId`, which is right exactly when the change is addressed to *no one* session — and these are addressed to precisely one, never the sender: their operands are `drill_state.pending_edits` and the built wizard workbook, session-local residue (gotcha 30) private to whoever staged them (improvise-tom1). Unaddressed, B's `ApplyAndClearDrill` commits A's uncommitted typing and B's `AcceptWizardModel` swaps the document out of a dialogue B never opened — both demonstrated against `Sessions::apply` before removal. So 29 − `SwitchView` − these two = **26**. The effects are untouched and still reached by the key path. Not permanent: multi-client drill wants the *addressed* form, which is where ADR 001 layer 2 goes anyway. Guarded by `no_model_command_commits_another_clients_session_local_state`, plus a companion asserting both effects still exist and are still model changes so the first cannot pass by naming nothing. **`Sessions::apply_checked` routes the model half to `apply_model`**, which relays `adopt_cursor_epoch`'s `ResetCursor` and `adopt_deleted_views`'s per-client switch; a document-replacing `LoadModel` bumps the generation and lands in the rebase arm. The former claim here — that `ViewBack`, `ViewForward` and `LoadModel` all end in `App::switch_to_view` so every mirror takes the accepted active view — was wrong on all three clauses after improvise-jytm and is deleted. A keymap lookup still cannot return a `Command`, and not for want of vocabulary: a binding names an *intent* resolved against `CmdContext` (`move-cursor down`) while a `Command` is the *resolved mutation* (`SetSelected { row, col }`) — improvise-gxi's AC 4 asks for something the split forbids. @@ -310,7 +311,9 @@ persistence/mod.rs 403 / 10t document lifecycle: save/load/gzip/legacy-JS facade re-exporting format_md/parse_md/export_csv* persistence/format.rs 385 / 11t format_md: Workbook → .improv text persistence/parse.rs 1519 / 43t parse_md: pest tree-walk → Workbook (+ grammar generator) -persistence/export.rs 156 / 3t export_csv / render_csv +persistence/export.rs 219 / 4t export_csv / render_csv. From fe816c9734afa40664aa7cc92d348ec30410deee Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Edward Langley Date: Mon, 21 Sep 2026 04:15:16 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 3/6] kb: a mitigation that names the wrong file is not a mitigation MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit PR #91 deferred a wire-level gap because 'keys.rs emits no ChangeMode at all'. True, and irrelevant: keys.rs holds only BrowserKey, and the live browser resolver is improvise_protocol::resolve, which emits ChangeMode(AppMode::Normal) at five sites. The browser front end kept the very bug the PR fixed for the TUI, and the suite was green over a divergence the PR created. I copied that false clause straight into improvise-e5pf when I filed it. Corrected, and raised to P2: it is live, not latent. The rule: before writing 'X does not do Y' as the reason a gap may be deferred, grep for Y rather than for X. The claim that matters is about the behaviour, and the file you happen to have open is not the only place it lives. Also records that improvise-sihr's prose defended its staleness with an example that works for a different reason — toggle-records-mode overwrites normal_mode()'s answer in both directions, so the staleness is neutralised there rather than exercised, and the case that would have tested it regressed. That resolution lives on the App. Command::ChangeMode(AppMode::Normal) is also on the WIRE, and improvise-protocol/src/reduce.rs:195 folds it as `view.mode = mode.clone()` with no resolution.

## It is LIVE, not latent
The original claim was "keys.rs emits no ChangeMode". That is wrong, and this is the
ticket the prose would have prevented.

crates/improvise-gp/src/fit.rs passes `&Overrides::default()` to `preprocess`,
so it never tells preprocess which header columns are document categories --
although the very next line does tell `Features::of`. `preprocess` then infers
Numeric -> Date -> Categorical from the cell values, so:

* a regular category whose items all parse as numbers (a `Year` category with
items 2024/2025) becomes ColumnKind::Numeric, and its feature is refused as
Artefact::NumericCategory
* a regular category whose items are all ISO dates becomes ColumnKind::Date,
and its features are refused as Artefact::DatePart

In both cases `Year IS 2024` is EXACTLY spellable, and the fit is refused
anyway. Closing a length-not-completeness check needs an enumeration INDEPENDENT of the derivation, and stable Rust has none for an enum carrying data: variant_count is nightly, strum::EnumIter cannot construct a variant holding a MinibufferConfig. Serde can — the Deserialize derive builds the complete variant-name list from the enum definition and publishes it in its unknown-variant message. variants.rs reads it back and diffs it against what the cycle reached. The dependency on serde's message format is made loud rather than silent: it panics naming the message if the split fails and asserts the parsed list has more than one name, so a format change cannot degrade into a vacuous pass. Verified by reading it rather than taking the report. Also: a consolidation's frozen behaviour is a date, not a decision. A consolidation must preserve what it moves or its agreement test cannot tell 'both ends agree' from 'both ends changed together' — so the rule is frozen for the duration of the move, and afterwards a single home reads as decided. improvise-8qlr froze name-only group coalescing; the test still pinning it justified itself with 'because that is what src/ui/grid.rs uses', a clause 8qlr had already made false. The row 'Change what a browser resolves without the host' named improvise-wasm-client/src/keys.rs. That file is 187 lines holding only BrowserKey — a KeyboardEvent flattened to an improvise key. The resolve function and KeyOutcome live in improvise-protocol/src/resolve.rs and are shared by both front ends. So the author consulted the map, opened the file it named, grepped it honestly, and wrote a true-and-irrelevant negative claim into context/ — the one place design-principles §6 says a reason must not be wrong, because nothing can find it later. A stale pointer does not merely fail to help. It manufactures confident false claims, because the reader has done exactly the work the map told them to do. The whole wasm-client inventory block was stale with it: keys.rs listed at 1597 lines against an actual 187 with a description of what resolve.rs does, render.rs 669 against 888, socket.rs 444 against 289, lockstep 606 against 1126 — and state.rs listed at all, when ClientState moved to improvise-protocol/src/client.rs. My earlier line-count refresh missed every one of them for the reason I documented at the time: the wasm-client/ shorthand prefix resolves to no path, so a path-walking refresh skips the block silently. It did not: add_category defaults a new
category to Column and nothing moved it, so all three views had none_cats
{_Index, _Dim} and the stated input to the hazard was absent. An unprobed path
reported as a negative result. Setting Product to Axis::None explicitly made the
property test fail on the first run.

MECHANISM. App::rebuild_layout calls recompute_formulas(&none_cats) for the
HOST's view, populating Model::formula_cache. project::grid_in on the elsewhere
path builds the other view's GridLayout against that same, stale cache. The
cache is keyed by the coordinates the recompute used, so with Product on None in
the host's view the Total cells are keyed WITHOUT a Product coordinate; the other
view, which has Product on Column, asks for (Region, Product, _Measure=Total),
finds nothing, and -- because prune_empty is on -- drops both Total columns.

MEASURED, two-view fixture, formula Total = SUM(Revenue):

host on Second, projecting Second 6 columns incl. Candidates, none
chosen:

- Key formula_cache by view (or by none_cats), so one Model can hold more than
one view's derived values.
- Recompute on the session's behalf at a &mut App boundary (Sessions::project
is one) and cache per session.
- Declare it out of scope: formulas are evaluated for the host's view and a
client on another view sees the host's derivation. That is a decision, not
the current state, which is an accident.

Note this is the SAME SHAPE as improvise-t6db: the elsewhere path of grid_in is
only as correct as the inputs it can rebuild, and prune_empty was the first such
input. none_cats is the second, and it is worse, because prune_empty was one
line and this one cannot be fixed where it is observed.

GUARDED MEANWHILE by a_hosts_none_cats_leak_into_another_views_formula_columns
in ui/project.rs, a characterization test that asserts the bug. With the mode wrong it does not decline: it composes typed_cell_command(id, &text) and a Basis claim against a records grid, whose columns are [coords.., +cat, measures.., +] (gotcha 1). That is A WRONG WRITE, strictly worse than the black hole it was written to produce.

resolve.rs:708 create_column() exit mode — picks Normal where it should pick RecordsNormal, re-entering the same wrong state after every column creation. Self-sustaining.

resolve.rs:744 advanced() — host counterpart commit.rs:547, `at_bottom_right && ctx.is_records_mode()` -> AddRecordRow. Round 2 added a 'was == self.view_name()' guard, which fixes that — but it also exempts the FIRST geometry effect after a mid-batch SwitchView from the check altogether, because there is no basis for the new view yet, so the code re-bases and skips.

## Steps to Reproduce
app.apply_effects(vec![SwitchView("Second"), TransposeAxes]);

This is
improvise-jytm's regression, not PR #49's -- but #49 widens it.

improvise-jytm (#48) made "which view a client is on" per-client: apply_switch
moves only the asker's mirror. `Sessions::adopt_cursor_epoch`
(ui/project.rs:904-912) was not updated and still resets EVERY mirror and returns
`Broadcast::ToAll(Command::ResetCursor)`. So a reshape of view A throws away the
cursor of a client sitting on view B, which nothing reshaped.

THE BISECT IS THE LOAD-BEARING PART:
- at a3bef6e (main, post-#48) with HideItem -> PASSES
- at a3bef6e (main, post-#48) with TransposeAxes -> FAILS
So the hole is already in main. What PR #49 (improvise-9mo9) changes is the
NUMBER OF EFFECTS THAT REACH IT: from 2 (TransposeAxes, CycleAxis) to 12.

THE FIX IS SMALL AND THE TYPE ALREADY EXISTS. `Broadcast::To(SessionId, Command)`
is there for exactly this shape (improvise-6c6q, improvise-jytm). adopt_cursor_epoch
should reset only the mirrors whose `active_view` is the view that reshaped, and
return one `To(id, ResetCursor)` per affected client instead of one ToAll. Note
the return type becomes Vec<Broadcast> rather than Option<Broadcast>.

WHY IT WAS NOT FIXED IN PR #49: changing ToAll -> To for cursor invalidation is a
decision about broadcast semantics in a design that landed hours earlier, and
gotcha 36 records a deliberate argument for ToAll here ("a consequence the asker
is owed like everybody else"). PRE-EXISTING, but
that PR is the first thing in the repo to produce evidence for it.

`AddItem`, `AddItemInGroup` and `RemoveItem` declare
`EffectKind::Model(ModelChange::CellData)`. `App::apply_effects` bumps
`layout_version` only for `ModelChange::LayoutGeometry`, so these three do not
move it. Since improvise-9mo9 they DO call `app.reset_cursor()`, which bumps
`cursor_epoch`.

So one event moves one counter and not the other, and the two counters are
answering the same question: "has the grid's shape changed under you". A client
is told its cursor is invalid (`Command::ResetCursor`) while its `layout_version`
basis tier still reads current, so a batch composed against the old layout is
accepted.

THE EVIDENCE IS THIS PR'S OWN TEST. `every_reshaping_model_command_invalidates_
every_cursor` now asserts, with a `grid_shape()` guard over `row_items`/
`col_items`, that `AddItem`/`AddItemInGroup`/`RemoveItem` REALLY DO reshape the
grid. Moving these three to `LayoutGeometry` changes what every
client is told is dirty and widens the basis rejection surface. The arithmetic is not subtle: the player is
told `cols: 120`, the container is ~356px wide inside the page's 16px gutters,
and 356 / 120 gives about 3px per character, so the player scales the font down
to 4.83px to fit. Desktop is **13.11px** and perfectly fine, so this is purely a
narrow-viewport effect and nothing about the current desktop rendering needs to
change.

WHY THE PRIORITY IS HIGHER THAN IT LOOKS: until the user's ruling on
improvise-kh8 the landing page sat at `/landing/` and this was a page few people
would reach on a phone. It is now the SITE ROOT — the first thing a phone
visitor sees is four panels of unreadable grey mush above the call to action.

PROPOSED FIX (the reviewer's, and it is the right shape): stop asking the player
to fit 120 columns into the viewport and let it overflow instead —
`overflow-x: auto` on `.player`, plus either `fit: false` or an explicit
`terminalFontSize` in the `AsciinemaPlayer.create()` options, so the font is
chosen rather than derived from the width.

ONE THING TO CHECK WHEN FIXING, because getting it wrong trades this bug for a
worse one: the overflow must be contained INSIDE `.player`. A fix that lets the
page itself scroll sideways breaks the whole document on a phone rather than one
section of it. The check is that `document.documentElement.scrollWidth` still
equals `clientWidth` at 390px afterwards.

NOTE A CANDIDATE that would close this for free: improvise-2oxt re-records the
casts. If they are re-recorded at a narrower geometry than 120 columns, the
arithmetic changes by itself — so whoever takes 2oxt should decide the geometry
with this ticket in front of them rather than after.

A fix was written and measured during PR #47 (4.83px -> 11.95px via a
`max-width: 900px` media query giving `.player` `overflow-x: auto` and an 880px
min-width, page scrollWidth unchanged at 390) and then REVERTED on the user's
ruling that this should be filed rather than fixed in that PR. Firefox and WebKit both carry
`testMatch: /opfs\\.spec\\.js/`, so `shell.spec.js` — every assertion about
web/app.js, including "the page draws the demo document out of the worker" and
"committing an edit sends one frame and shows the host's value" — runs on
Chromium alone. The config's own comment says so ("The shell spec is
Chromium-only"), and the stated reason is that `routeWebSocket` is slower and
flakier across three engines.

THAT REASON APPLIES TO FOUR OF THE SIX SPECS, NOT SIX. The four `?ws=` specs
mock a peer with `routeWebSocket`. The two under "the standalone deployment"
do not: they load `/index.html` with no query and drive the in-page worker over
OPFS — which is precisely the deployment bck's criterion is about, and
precisely the code Firefox exercises differently (its OPFS implementation is
already run by opfs.spec.js, so the engine is known to support the path).

So the cheap and honest change is to let the standalone describe block run on
Firefox while leaving the routeWebSocket block Chromium-only. That is a
`testMatch`/grep split rather than a third copy of the spec.

WHAT MUST NOT HAPPEN: turning the whole file on for Firefox and then quieting
whatever flakes. The flakiness argument is about the mocked-socket specs and is
recorded; widening it to the standalone ones would be adopting a reason that
was never given for them.

## Steps to Reproduce

1. `grep -n testMatch harness/playwright.config.js` — firefox and webkit are
both pinned to `opfs.spec.js`.
2. `cd harness && npx playwright test --project=firefox --list` — no test from
`shell.spec.js` is listed.
3. improvise-bck criterion (1) nevertheless reads "in Chrome and Firefox".
harness/tests/shell.spec.js's 'the standalone deployment' describe block runs on the firefox project as well as chromium, and passes there in CI; the four routeWebSocket specs stay Chromium-only with the existing reason still written down. The cause is neither direction this ticket offered, and it is not concurrency in the sense the ticket meant.

MEASURED over all 100 push-to-main CI runs 2026-09-19T22:02Z..2026-09-21T05:02Z, from the run/job/step/log APIs:

12/12 artifact-not-found deploy failures had ANOTHER run's SUCCESSFUL Pages
deployment complete inside their own upload->deploy window
2/56 successes had the same
0/4 other deploy failures (those are the unrelated 'Create Pages site failed')

DIRECTION IS SETTLED. The oldest run of the 17:47Z batch failed at 17:47:23Z, BEFORE the next deploy started (17:47:31Z) and before any Pages deployment existed at all, since deploy-pages fetches artifact metadata before creating one. It cannot have been caused by its own deploy, by supersession, or by a concurrent one. The artifact was already gone.

THE DECISIVE OBSERVATION, and it is scoped by artifact NAME rather than by run: run 35560726456 finalized harness-serve, wasm-bundles and github-pages seconds apart, each with an id; 2m21s later its own lookup reported 'Found 2 artifact(s)' with no github-pages. Same run, same token, same call, same retention. That single line rules out service flakiness, eventual consistency, retention, token scope and a v3/v4 backend mismatch simultaneously — any of them would have taken the siblings too.

RULED OUT: queue depth (the three deploys never queued — 9s and 17s apart, each failure taking 1s); retention (all shared retention-days: 1, and the newest-finalized expires LAST, so expiry can yield 0/1/1 or 0/0/1 but never this ticket's 0/1/0); deletion by the action (an upstream feature request asks for that capability, open precisely because nothing does it); action-version drift (successes and failures alternate minute by minute on identically-resolved SHAs).

ONE CLAUSE OF THIS TICKET'S OWN CORRECTION IS FALSIFIED. It argued the tip-of-main guard would have skipped the publishing deploy 'and let 52507a6 deploy and fail anyway', assuming 52507a6's loss was independent of its neighbour. It was not: 5f871f7's deploy completed FOUR SECONDS before 52507a6's began. PR #46 aimed at the right quantity for the wrong reason.

IT STILL MUST NOT SHIP. The association is not a mechanism, and the mechanism is not deterministic — 5f871f7 had a foreign deploy land inside its own window and survived. A guard measured at nothing, against a probabilistic effect, is doctrine(measure_the_obvious_fix_before_reporting_it_as_the_fix).

## Acceptance Criteria (REPLACED — the old one asked for the guard this evidence does not support)
- Either: no two runs hold a github-pages artifact across another run's Pages deployment.
- Or: narrow the upload->deploy window and measure the failure rate against it.
- Before any fix, reproduce deliberately: two pushes seconds apart on a scratch repo, polling /runs/{id}/artifacts every few seconds through both deploys, and watch the github-pages entry disappear at the moment the other deploy completes. Cheap, and it is what turns an association into a mechanism.

Full argument: context/code/tooling.md §3. WHAT IS STILL UNKNOWN: why GitHub removes it. 12/12 vs 2/56 is an association; no upstream issue, changelog or doc describes the behaviour, and both the reaped and surviving artifacts are 404 now (retention-days: 1), so the state is gone.
A run whose commit is no longer the tip of main skips actions/deploy-pages instead of failing; a burst of merges to main produces exactly one deploy attempt and no red X on the superseded runs.
CORRECTION 2026-09-20, from adversarial review of PR #46 — THE ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION'S PREMISE IS WRONG, and the fix built on it was closed unmerged.

The description says only the NEWEST run keeps its artifact. Re-checked against the API, it was the MIDDLE one:

04e4e3d (oldest) run 35526758561 artifacts=0 deploy=failure
5f871f7 (middle) run 35526767814 artifacts=1 deploy=SUCCESS
52507a6 (newest) run 35526774007 artifacts=0 deploy=failure <- tip of main

So a 'skip unless this commit is the tip of main' guard would have skipped 5f871f7 — the one deploy that actually published — and let 52507a6 deploy and fail anyway. Pages never updates, main still red: strictly worse than the status quo. PR #46 closed on that evidence.

The guard also aimed at the wrong failure class: it reduces the NUMBER of deploys, while the observed error is a missing artifact within a run's OWN scope. Queue depth is not what makes an artifact survive.

WHAT IS STILL UNKNOWN, and what any future fix must establish FIRST: why two of three artifacts were deleted when the upload step was green in all three. Note the surviving artifact belongs to the run whose deploy SUCCEEDED, which suggests the causation may run the other way (the deploys failed because their artifacts were already gone, not the reverse). Do not ship another guard until that is measured — the first one was built on a misread table and review caught it, which is the only reason it did not land.
Found while grooming improvise-bck after wave 1. It is the one acceptance criterion of the standalone web MVP that is not a verification gap but a MISSING FEATURE.

improvise-bck says: "load a bundled demo .improv file, EDIT CELLS, ADD A FORMULA, save to OPFS, reload the page, verify persistence". Everything in that sentence is now demonstrated by harness/ except adding a formula, because THE BROWSER HAS NO FORMULA ENTRY AT ALL.

WHAT EXISTS: the formula PANEL has a projection (FormulaCache) and the browser receives it. What does not exist is any way to compose one — `commit-buffer formula` is in the hand-written list of text-entry commits the client cannot resolve (see improvise-e24v and the audit on improvise-g9jb), so FormulaEdit is a mode a browser can ENTER and not COMMIT. That is the dead-room shape doctrine(a_doorway_to_a_black_hole_is_worse_than_the_key) names, and `strands_the_user` currently refuses SavePrompt and ExportPrompt but NOT FormulaEdit.

SO THERE ARE TWO HONEST OUTCOMES AND THEY SHOULD BE DECIDED TOGETHER:
1. Implement `commit-buffer formula` client-side. All its operands are in ViewState (improvise-e24v lists it under "needs nothing added to the protocol"), so this is the cheap half — and then the browser can add a formula and improvise-bck's criterion is met as written.
2. Or refuse FormulaEdit in `strands_the_user` until (1) lands, so the browser stops offering a room that swallows typing — and improvise-bck's criterion is amended to say formulas are a TUI-only affordance for now.

DOING NEITHER IS THE CURRENT STATE AND IT IS THE WORST OF THE THREE: the mode opens, the user types a formula, and nothing happens.

NOTE FOR WHOEVER TAKES IT: the emitted formula must go through the same add_formula path as a hand-typed one, so _Measure target handling stays identical (gotcha 7) — the same constraint improvise-vx3 worked under. And parse_formula strips pipes off a target (gotcha 34), so the client must not pre-quote.

## Steps to Reproduce

1. Open the document in the browser and press `F` (or `:enter-mode formula-edit`).
2. The mode opens — `enter-mode` resolves locally in the wasm client.
3. Type a formula and press Enter. `commit-buffer formula` has no arm in `keys.rs::step`, so `resolve` returns `Upstream`, and `Host::handle` answers `ClientFrame::Key` with an explicit empty vec.
4. Nothing happens. The typing is gone and no error is shown.

`strands_the_user` refuses `SavePrompt` and `ExportPrompt` for exactly this shape and does not refuse `FormulaEdit`.

Either commit-buffer formula resolves client-side and a browser can add a formula end to end (demonstrated in harness/), or FormulaEdit is refused by strands_the_user with improvise-bck's criterion amended to say formulas are TUI-only for now. After jmjz that is exactly one pass rather than three — 95ms at 18,000 cells, 1.32s at 90,000 — but the common case during scrolling, panel toggling and cursor movement is that the grid has not changed at all.

## Why this is cheap to do here
The invalidation signal ALREADY EXISTS and is maintained for other reasons:
- document_generation, layout_version, record_versions (gotcha 40, ADR 001's three tiers)
- improvise-mcq4's view_shapes / view_frame observation

A GridBody memo keyed on those takes an unchanged grid to roughly zero.

## Why the remaining pass cannot be narrowed instead
Ruled out twice over, and the review measured it: totals sum EVERY row including ones a viewport scrolled past (gotcha 44), and widths are content-adaptive over every row. The benchmark's windowing ratio stayed 1.2-1.4x precisely because the surviving pass is the one a viewport cannot narrow. improvise-i5tk's decline stands.

## Acceptance Criteria
- A memo on the projected grid body keyed on the existing invalidation tiers; no NEW tier invented, because a second description of "has the document changed" is the disease (see the reasoning behind gotcha 39 and 45, where the trigger is the counter moving rather than a table of command variants).
- Benchmarked: an unchanged grid across frames should approach zero, and the first frame must not regress.
- The negative arm matters as much as the positive: a test that a grid which DID change is recomputed. A memo that never invalidates is fast and wrong, and it is the failure mode nothing will notice.

## Second-order, much bigger, not this ticket
~5us per cell at 18k is dominated by evaluate_aggregated doing a matching_values set intersection per cell (gotcha 18). An incremental aggregate index is the deeper fix. 90,000 cells at 1.32s remains unusable; that case is labelled pathological and memoisation helps it most.

+
Found by the round-2 review of PR #91, by injection.

Replacing settle_normal_mode's guard with a one-way version — matching only AppMode::Normal, dropping the RecordsNormal arm — leaves THE ENTIRE WORKSPACE SUITE PASSING.

## Why the crossing test does not catch it
a_batch_that_leaves_records_and_then_sets_normal_lands_in_normal drives the LAYOUT both ways, but both branches end the batch with enter-mode normal, so the mode handed to the settle is AppMode::Normal in BOTH directions.
